What I love about this is that these movies, at entry number seven, are talking about their lead character the way we do. Only a movie star as mighty as Tom Cruise is this invincible in the face of spoilers! Then, when the theme music kicks in - a variant of the original Lalo Schifrin composition from the Mission: Impossible television series of the 1960s - you get glimpses of what's coming up in the rest of the picture in a montage. True to the formula, the pre-title sequence involves one of the greatest recurring gags to happen in all of movies. When director Christopher McQuarrie does pump the brakes, the dialogue scenes in which Cruise's Hunt is "on comms" with his buddies Luther (Ving Rhames), Benjy (Simon Pegg), and Isla (Rebecca Ferguson) have a brisk pace, too, as do the "this matter is of grave importance" scenes with government agents played by Shea Whigham or the returning Henry Czerny as Kittridge. This is a picture that moves at the speed of sound, with one outrageous, exhilarating set piece after the other.
